"IHP is harder than this"

Dan "The Handler" Hornbuckle fought on Thursday (8/19/2010) in Bellator 25 against Brad Blackburn. The Handler won the fight with a 29-28 unanimous decision. I spoke to Dan the next day about the fight and he said "In between rounds 2 and 3, when I was sitting on the stool, I thought to myself IHP is harder than this!" Dan was able to say this because of the fight circuits designed for this fight. Rounds 1 and 3 reflected his game plan and round 2 simulated a round [...]

Just want to take this opportunity to congratulate IHP client, Max Susskind (Jr. midfielder- St Andrews lacrosse team), for being ranked - according to insidelacrosse.com - as the top 30th High School lacrosse player in the country and 8th ranked midfielder.

Max and I have been training together since his freshman year and it has been quite rewarding to watch him grow as an athlete and more importantly as a person.

How low can you go?

As it pertains to squats, the question shouldn't be how low should you go, but rather how low can you go?

From my own observations at the Institute of Human Performance most individuals, barring injury, demonstrate the ability (thus mobility) to perform a bodyweight (BW) squat (i.e. onto a box) to a depth that is parallel or deeper. However, add a vertical load - such as a barbell squat - dominated by gravity and the previously demonstrated mobility is overshadowed by [...]

Olympic Lifts for Baseball Strength Training...Really?

Just so we're on the same page, baseball is a rotational sport. So while recently looking over a collegiate baseball summer training program I couldn't help but notice Olympic lifts were included. Really?

Olympic lifting is a sport in and of itself that includes lifts such as the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk. These lifts require a tremendous amount of technique and demand a high level of skill specific to the sport of Olympic lifting.

So why are these m [...]

The Ultimate Fighter Finale took place lat night, Saturday June 19th 2010. Rich Attonito fought Jamie Yager in the 1st fight on the card. It was an amazing fight. I worked with Rich preparing for this fight, we used guerilla strength and fight specific circuits to get ready. Rich defeated Jamie in the 2nd round by taking his back and ground and pounding him until the referee stopped the fight.

CONGRATS RICH !

Music as a Motivational Tool

Here's a situation everyone can relate to...You get home from work/school and you're tired as hell. You know you want to work out but...you're tired as hell! Somehow, you gather the momentum to get changed, get in your car, and go to IHP...ehem...I mean the gym. ;-) You get there, and you start your workout. A quarter of the way into it, you lose track of yourself and lose the enthusiasm. All of this leads to you leaving early and going home to watch The Biggest Loser and feeling like a loser [...]

Lately I have been hearing the words “I can’t,” A LOT! It seems to be a staple in the fitness world language. “I can’t do a squat, I have bad knees.” “I can’t rotate my shoulder, it’s weak.” I used to be an “I can’t-er!” Growing up I always had knee “issues.” Many doctors and coaches would say your knees are weak, don’t do that exercise, don’t run at all, you will never [...]

Preparing for an MMA fight against a Striker

Micah Miller and I are currently preparing him for an MMA fight against an opponent who has a boxing style. We anticipate the fight to be more of striking match, so I must prepare him for a striking battle. Part of this will involve fatigue resistant training of his shoulders so he can throw punches the entire fight. I will be implementing a new circuit with him, which will involve the JC Chisel Your Chest routine, punches on the heavy bag, the hydro-gym power 360, the versa climber, and some ab [...]

General Guidelines of the training cycles

Keeping your training cycles in order is the most effective way to achieve peak performance in your clients and athletes. Here are some of the basic guidelines of these cycles and their fitness equivalents.

Conditioning (TONE): allows the client or athlete to establish their functional capacity.

Hypertrophy (BUILD): the main target is to increase the structural integrity of the tissues by increasing the cross sectional area of the tissue.

Strength (STRENGTH): the objective i [...]

Determination: The STA Football Philosophy

I had an interesting chat with JC tonight. However, before I get onto the subject, a brief premise. For those of you who don't know, I went to St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) and graduated in 2001. Before that, my sister went there and my father coached there. Now, I've been coaching there for the past 4 years. All in all, I have been a member of the STA family for over 14 years. In the years that I have been a coach, we have won back-to-back state championships in 2007 and 2008 and were voted the F [...]

What's the problem...Not what you think

Many of us have knee pain. However, there's a really good chance that the pain we experience in our knee is only a symptom and not the problem. There are two possible scenarios that could be causing your knee pain.

1) Tight Psoas - Tight psoas inhibits/turns-off your glutes thus limiting the amount of force that your glutes can normally produce. In part, the glutes are responsible for decelerating femoral internal rotation.&nbsp [...]

Do you have low back pain? This might be the reason...

One of the biggest reasons that we experience low back pain is because we sit to much. Most of us sit all day at work and then go home and sit some more. This results in tight hip flexors which have a direct impact on the health of your low back.

How do we address this problem? The first mistake people make is they go to the gym and do a majority of their exercises in the SEATED position. So sitting is the cause of our problems and then we go [...]

Grip Work

A person's grip is extremely important, but most times overlooked. If you cannot grip something your other muscles cannot do anything with that object. This means that we must incorporate grip strength into our workouts. This is done by using the grip dominator series. For grips that involve a pinch grip I use the Clamp grip which is about 2.5" in diameter. For applications that involve a hook grip, I use the lockdown grip which is about 4" in diameter. For grips that involve clothing [...]
